CREATIVE DESIGN // INDIE PUBLISHING // ART DIRECTION

We conjure forth digital psychedelia laden with tactile relics of an analog age. We are PATTERN MACHINES, a creative design studio.

We create experimental works of art using a mixed media approach, occupying the spaces between mechanical and organic, analog and digital.

We create and publish original print matter and provide creative services for any type of visual medium.

What is this?

PATTERN MACHINES is a creative design studio. We primarily create and publish our own printed works and experimental art, but we also take on external design work. We do book layout, art direction, motion graphics, animated visuals, illustration, physical design, album covers, pitch decks, art and experimental imagery in general. PATTERN MACHINES brings together a love for psychedelic art, digital nostalgia, beautiful books, and connecting with other artists and creatives.

How many people work at the studio?
PATTERN MACHINES is primarily a one-person operation, run by artist Ash Alexander. [ Before starting PATTERN MACHINES, Ash worked for 15 years as a Computer Graphics artist in the Film & TV industry working on feature films, TV shows, advertisements, and game cinematics. ]

Where are you located?
The Pacific Northwest region of the United States.

Can I hire you for design work?
Please say hello! hello@pattern-machines.net

Will you publish my works?
We're always looking for other artists to collaborate with. We're seeking completed works to publish and distribute, and we're always on the lookout for artists, writers, and creatives to contribute to PATTERN MACHINES magazine. We can also support your in-progress works with book design & layout. collab@patttern-machines.net

I heard you've got free stuff.
Yes, we like accessibility and don't believe in digital scarcity, so we strive to provide free digital versions of our works, usually in PDF form. Check the "links" page for more info. If you enjoy these digital products, please consider buying a physical version to show your support.

Do you use AI?
No. Everything is human-made, and there's no interest in using generative "AI" for any part of the creative process, because we actually like making stuff. As a result, Ash likes to document the creative process in PATTERN MACHINES magazine as well as on YouTube and Patreon.

What software do you use?
We make it a point of pride to use 100% free and open-source software. Currently we're using the following for our entire operation: Blender, Krita, GIMP, Natron, Inkscape, Scribus, Glaxnimate, LibreOffice, Ubuntu Linux.
